About ECTA
___________________________________________________
History
The Essex County Trail Association is a non-profit tax exempt organization
which began in March 1982 as a result of discussions among a group
of citizens from the towns of Hamilton, Wenham, Ipswich, Topsfield,
Essex, and West Newbury. These individuals, all of whom possess
a deep appreciation and pride for the open land available to us,
felt an extreme responsibility to join together to define ways to
meet their obligations to the land and landowners so that land,
both public and private, remains open and in good condition.
Mission
The Essex County Trail Association is dedicated to the preservation
and maintenance of open trails in our local communities for the
purpose of passive recreation and the benefit of the environment.
ECTA works to build coalitions with national and local associations,
to serve as a liaison between membership and land owners, and to
encourage responsible trail use.
Objectives
The objectives of the Essex County Trail Association are:
To promote the responsible use of the land and trails.
To maintain the trails.
To promote good will and serve as liaison between the trail users
and landowners.
To provide organized support for the preservation of open land.
Through the efforts of our founders and many dedicated volunteer
members, we are today an Association that has grown to include 750
members who are users of the trails in Essex County. Our non-profit
status was awarded in 1989. The underlying mission of the Association
continues to be our dedication to the preservation and maintenance
of open land and trails as a natural resource for the benefit of
the community. Through our objectives we seek to develop and instill,
in all land users, the sense of stewardship, pride and responsibility
for the proper use and appreciation of the land.
